Included in the following tours:
The mighty Akkerman Fortress proudly stands out on the high Dnister Firth bank in Bilhorod-Dnistrovsky town. It had been built in place of the ancient Greek settlement Tyras dating back to the 5th century BC. Foundation stones of the fortification had been laid somewhere in the 13th century, and it had taken about two hundred years to form the major structure we can see nowadays. The Akkerman Fortress, along with the Kamenets-Podilsky one, is the biggest fortress we have in Ukraine. The town of location is remarkable too - Bilhorod-Dnistrovsky has recently celebrated 2500 years anniversary, which puts it in the list of the oldest extant towns of the world.
The formidable citadel has two and a half kilometers of fortification walls. Up to 5-meter thick coquina walls bear 20 towers, each from 5 to 15 meters in height. Shoaled moat surrounding the stronghold has overgrown with high grasses to all its 14-meter width. But once it had been 22 meters deep to secure the citadel. There are garrison and port courts, chapel, civil facilities, dungeon and treasury behind the Fortress walls.
If stones could speak they would tell us stories of many daring seizure and brave defense, grand victories and big failures, every-day life routines and celebrations of Genoese, Moldovans, Turks who put their work together into this handsome stronghold at different times. In general, it is the place where one can feel the time. The ruins of Christian Shrine give foundation to Muslim Mosque, time wipes the Mosque away and only one high minaret remains to show the way to passing ships… In 1832 Akkerman discontinued being a military facility, retired after 5 hundred year military carrier to become a wonderful historical and architectural monument of the Middle Ages.
The Akkerman Fortress undoubtedly is one of the most impressive in the Eastern Europe. Pass broad wooden bridge through the old gates, walk defense path on the high Fortress walls, peer through the towers embrasures to the firth. Besides sightseeing, you can happen to be a visitor of historical fencing or other fights tournament, live action roleplaying or music festival, which nowadays take place in the Akkerman Fortress.
